The Most Important Skill Young Soccer Players Should Master

If you’ve ever wondered what skill top coaches prioritise when identifying promising young footballers, the answer is simple: First Touch.

At EDGE Football Academy, we believe that mastering the fundamentals is key to long-term success — and first touch sits at the very top of the list. Whether your child is just beginning their soccer journey or is already competing at a high level, a sharp first touch can dramatically elevate their performance on the pitch.

Why Is First Touch So Important?

As legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff once said:

“Technique is not being able to juggle a ball 1000 times. Anyone can do that by practicing. Then you can work in the circus. Technique is passing the ball with one touch, with the right speed, at the right foot of your teammate.”

A great first touch sets up every other aspect of the game. Here’s how:

1. More Time & Space

The ball can come at a player in countless ways — fast, bouncing, aerial, etc. The ability to bring it under control quickly and intelligently gives the player more time and space. This reduces panic, improves decision-making, and allows for greater tactical awareness.

2. Improved Vision & Scanning

With a controlled first touch, a player can keep their head up and scan the field. This means they’re more likely to spot attacking runs, open space, or the perfect passing lane — all while keeping possession.

3. Increased Confidence

Players who trust their touch are more willing to receive the ball under pressure. They don't hide from possession — they demand it. That makes them valuable teammates and confident playmakers in any game situation.

How Can Players Improve Their First Touch?

At EDGE, our elite coaching staff trains players through game-realistic scenarios that develop technical precision, fast reactions, and body positioning. Our APEX Development Pathway ensures players get exposure to high-level drills tailored to improve their first touch under pressure.

But the truth is — great first touch starts with time on the ball.

Touch the ball daily.

Practice with both feet.

Use walls, rebounders, and varied surfaces.

To help you get started, we’ve put together a short, effective training video:
